ULRICK & SHORT ONBOARDS KLIMATO TO SUPPORT CARBON TRANSPARENCY

Ulrick & Short has partnered with Klimato, the leading food sustainability solution, to bring ingredient-level carbon footprint calculations into its clean label range.

This collaboration will help food manufacturers gain clearer insight into the environmental impact of their formulations and make it easier to reduce emissions through reformulation.

Through Klimato, Ulrick & Short can now assess the CO2 values of both individual ingredients and complete recipe applications. This enables Ulrick & Short to showcase the direct carbon savings their customers can achieve by using its clean label solutions.

Supporting lower-carbon food development

Klimato’s platform allows Ulrick & Short to review recipe formulations and provide verified data on potential carbon savings. The carbon footprint is calculated in line with international methodologies, using a combination of ingredient sourcing, agricultural impact, and processing data.

Initial assessments have already highlighted significant reductions. For example, switching from a beef burger to a plant-based version results in a 97% cut in carbon emissions, reducing traditional egg glaze with Ulrick & Short’s plant based glazing solution, eziglazeTM, results in a 91% reduction, and reducing egg content by 50% in a muffin using Ulrick & Short’s egg replacers, ovaproxTM,  can cut 13% in emissions.

*Based on a standard portion size: 100 grams for most applications, and 125 grams for the plant-based burger to reflect a typical quarter-pound serving.

We teamed up with Klimato because their platform gives us exactly what we need: carbon data for all our products and the recipes they’re used in. That means we can properly track the carbon savings our ingredients deliver and back up our claims with real numbers

Gunn added, “It also helps us support our customers more effectively. With clear, science-backed insights, we can answer questions in more depth and help them move towards their own sustainability goals.”

These insights are now available to customers on request, helping them meet sustainability targets and improve the environmental performance of their product ranges.

Adding practical value for partners

This new capability is part of Ulrick & Short ‘s ongoing investment in added-value services for its partners. By integrating carbon calculations into their application development work, we can now offer customers reliable data to inform sustainability claims, buyer conversations, and internal reporting.

The aim is to make carbon footprint reduction more tangible and achievable, without sacrificing texture, performance, or functionality.
